Abernethy Gardens Tour

When in new Zealand, we enjoyed a "Gardens Open Day" in Wanganui. This set the seed of an idea, to both organise something for locals and tourists to do, and at the same time to raise money for local needy causes. 10 gardens arranged to throw their gates open for the day. These differed in size, style and use, and gave the opportunity to see the plants which will grow in our harsh winter climate. It was also an opportunity to take in the sensational views in this area - each from a different angle. Several gardens gave complimentary drinks and the ticket price included tea / coffee and light nibbles with the opportunity to have lunch at Auchendean for just a small amount extra. A few gardens had plants for sale.

A highlight for some is the walk into Curr Wood to see a
Stone-Age burial Cairn and the Twinflower flowering.
