Ski fields and Ptarmigan Restaurant on Cairngorm Mountain taken from Auchendean
The funicular train, ski lifts and skiers on Cairngorm Mountain can be seen with binoculars from Auchendean, but another ski centre, The Lecht is the same distance to the east from us as Cairngorm Mountain is to the south.
The funicular railway runs summer and winter but it's only when there is snow cover that people are allowed out of the top station. In the summer visitors are only allowed out onto a viewing platform and in clear conditions it's possible to see Ben Nevis on the West Coast and way beyond the Moray Firth to the north.
Besides skiing there is a formal snowboarding area with ramps.
Please refer to Cairngorm Mountain's web site for details of ski hire, ticket prices etc.
They are more able to control the snow here as it isn't as exposed to
high winds as at Cairngorm Mountain. They also manufacture snow
as it isnt likely to get blown away!
Highly informative, interactive
web site.
So long
as there is snow, then cross-country skiing is always possible. We
much prefer cross-country skiing as there are no queues; it's
free; it's healthy; it's quiet and you stand a great chance of
seeing some local woildlife!
